Target:
The summer school is aimed at young researchers, PhD students and engineers in the automotive and transportation sector.
The program is designed for individuals who wish to deepen their expertise in electrical machines and drives, particularly in the context of green transportation systems. Participants should have a strong engineering background, either through current doctoral studies or professional experience. This initiative is ideal for those who want to stay at the forefront of industry innovation and network with leading academics and industry professionals in a dynamic and immersive environment.
Applications of highly motivated master’s degree students could be taken into consideration in exceptional cases.

The Summer School offers a two-week experience divided in two modules:
- Module 1
“Advances in Electrical Machine and Drives for green transportation”, from 8th to 12th June 2026, which combines classroom lectures, seminars and company visits with networking opportunities, social events and cultural excursions. A PhD poster session is also included to give the possibility to Doctoral Candidates to share experiences and technical information about their projects. The best three poster presentations will be awarded during the gala dinner. - Module 2
“Applications of Electrical Machine and Drives for green transportation”, from 15th to 19th June 2026, for practicing with useful software for the design and control of electrical machines and power electronics.
Note: People can apply to the entire programme (Module 1 and Module 2) or just to Module 1.

The Summer School is divided in two modules:

- Module 1: “Advances in Electrical Machine and Drives for green transportation“, which includes keynote speeches from top transportation industry representatives, Technical Lectures from internationally renowned professors, and a PhD Poster session for Doctoral candidates to share experiences and technical information about their projects. In addition, networking opportunities, social events, company visits, and cultural excursions are included for a fully immersive experience.
The Summer School Module 1 includes:- 5 days event
- seminars and lectures
- PhD poster session
- social dinner (Day 3)
- best Poster presentation award (Day 3 during social dinner)
- company visit and cultural excursion (Day 4)
- welcome cocktail (Day 1)
- lunches and coffee breaks
- digital proceedings
- final test for the recognition of PhD training credits – 6 ECTS. The test consists of a series of multiple-choice questions on the topic covered in Module 1
- Module 2: “Applications of Electrical Machine and Drives for green transportation”, for practicing with useful software for the design and control of electrical machines and power electronics.
The Summer School Module 2 includes:- 5 days event
- practical experience of useful software
- company visit and cultural excursion (Day3)
- coffee breaks
- final test for the recognition of PhD training credits – 6 ECTS. The test consists of an assignment with involves the use of SWs practiced in Module 2
Participants:
Please note that there is no limit for participation to Module 1, whereas the school has a limited number of places for module 2 (20 seats).
The application process consists of filling out an online form. Selection is made via CV evaluation.
Selection Criteria:
- Be enrolled in or have recently completed a Master’s degree or a PhD in Engineering
- Be engineer working in the field of transportation.
- For module 2 only, priority is given to participants who are residents or have their domicile in the Emilia-Romagna region, or to students enrolled in universities or AFAM institutes located in the region.
If you are an IEEE IES student member working outside Europe you can also apply for travel reimbursement.
